Cattle Selling This Month at The Big Event at Express Ranches are the Best of the Best

For decades, Express Ranch has been a leader in the cattle industry and a dominating force among Angus breeders. Each year in August, cattle producers have a chance to snag some of those famous Express Ranch genetics at The Big Event.
Ron caught up with Jarold Callahan, CEO of Express Ranch at the Oklahoma Cattlemen's Conference in Norman, Okla. Callahan said he is excited about the cattle they are offering this year.
About 275 heifer-calves and fall calvers will be available the first day of the sale. These cattle will not be sent through the sale ring, rather videos will be available here.
On the second day, Callahan said they are offering what they think are the most elite cattle Express Ranch has to offer. High-end heifer calves, fall open heifers, two-year-old pairs, spring-born cow-calf pairs, donors, recipients and a few flushes will be available to purchase the second day.
According to Callahan, Express Ranch is so successful because of their common-sense selection paired with utilizing all that technology has to offer.
"We try to combine Expected Progeny Testing, genomic testing and phenotype as best we can," Callahan said. "We think we stack up well on that and we're really excited about this offering this year."
Callahan said the progress at Express Ranches and the progress the Angus breed as a whole, has been able to make in regard to the genetics of the cattle being produced today versus just a few years ago is amazing.
"We have made tremendous progress," Callahan said. "As you look at the progress we've made in terms of lowering calving difficulty by studying genomics and turning in a lot of phenotypic data - we are seeing improvement of growth, weaning weights, yearling weights, marbling and ribeye size."
Callahan says all this improvement not only helps Express Ranches, but also the commercial cattle producers who buy Express Ranch cattle.
