Randy Blach Says Sustainability is an Opportunity for Beef Cattle Industry

Supply and demand drives the global economy and right now, the demand for sustainability is driving all aspects of the supply chain to work harder to meet those expectations. Cattle producers know they already play a large role in sustainability, but are they sure their consumers do?
Radio Oklahoma's own Ron Hays revisited his conversation with Randy Blach, CEO of CattleFax, discussing the marketing opportunity cattle producers have right now, and what not taking advantage of it could do to the industry.
"I look at this whole area, with sustainability, carbon neutrality and traceability," Blach said. "I really believe that if we don't handle these things right, as an industry, this could turn into something just like the war on fat."
He is referring to the black mark put on red meat in the 80s and 90s in a push to get Americans eating healthier. Back then, studies linked illnesses like heart disease and obesity with a high-fat diet. According to this article from NPR.org, the creation of the first set of dietary guidelines for Americans urged Americans to replace dairy and red meat with pasta, potatoes and rice.
Those diet recommendations badly damaged demand for beef, and Blach said he does not want the industry to deal with something like that again.
"I hope producers really are taking this seriously," Blach said. "This could really turn into a wonderful opportunity for our industry - it's important to our consumers - we need to make sure we're at the table and can deliver those things."
Blach said communicating what beef cattle producers are already doing on the sustainability front, along with the constant research and push for smarter ways of raising beef cattle, is as important as staying competitive and productive.
