NCBA's Jerry Bohn Says There is No Doubt 75% Plan has Increased Negotiated Trade
Thu, 28 Oct 2021 18:12:49 CDT
Three-quarters of data are now in from the producer side of things when it comes to the 75% Plan. Jerry Bohn, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association president and regional trigger subgroup chair, told Radio Oklahoma’s own Ron Hays there is no doubt that negotiated trade has increased, thanks to the plan. The 75% Plan measures packer participation as well. Bohn said packer participation has been spotty, at best.
Listen to Ron's conversation with Jerry here.
“Likely, packer participation will probably be challenging in the quarter,” Bohn said. “It took us a while to get coordinated with the four major packers to provide the information for us … some have participated better than others, let’s put it that way.”
Bohn said he is pleased with the direction things are going under the plan. He said particularly in the Texas Panhandle, the volume of negotiated trade had almost reached zero.
“These producers have really stepped up in the last several months to increase the amount of negotiated trade,” Bohn said. “I think they all recognize the need to have a certain level of negotiated trade. We also want to avoid having some kind of government mandate.”
NCBA has endorsed Congress’ Cattle Contract Library Act of 2021. Bohn said while he doesn’t believe mandates are the way to equalize industry leverage between producers and packers, he believes the new bill is a way to make the business more transparent for producers.
“There has been a big disparity for the last two-to-three years between what the price of beef is selling for and what (producers) are receiving for their fed cattle,” Bohn said. “We believe that giving up more information to producers will allow them to make a better decision and maybe negotiate a little stronger.”
