Jack Ward Excited About Gene Editing Finally Arriving- Says Hereford Breed Working on Rules for Adoption
Tue, 22 Mar 2022 07:08:11 CDT
The Executive Vice President of the American Hereford Association, Jack Ward, told Radio Oklahoma Ag Network's Ron Hays that the breed continues to watch the approach of new technology for beef cattle producers. Ward says that Gene Editing seems to be getting closer to reality- and in fact, it has arrived earlier this month.
In a conversation with Ward on the sidelines of the Oklahoma Youth Expo, Hays asked about Gene Editing and how this work with the DNA of bovines might impact seedstock operations. Ward says "It's interesting that you have mentioned this as it has been just a few days ago that there was a release out from FDA that they have accepted a gene edited animal- an Angus Bull- I think he is in Florida- and it was a slick haired gene...we have been on the phone with the folks who have done that." He adds that they have written some quidelines and rules for the Hereford Association that would govern gene edited animals- and he says it is getting closer to reality for the entire beef cattle business.
(Editor's note- you can learn more about this Gene Editing development by clicking here for an article on the FDA decision from the American Vet Medical Association) The picture above shows an Angus Bull that is genetically modified to grow short, slick hair that could help it adapt to heat, as opposed to conventional Angus cattle with longer hair.
Ward also talked about the showring and what he was looking for in a market steer show like he was judging at the just concluded Oklahoma Youth Expo. He says that what he looks for in a top steer has not changed all that much in the last few years. "I think it's still incredibly important that they need to be sound in their structure- their composition has to be right- they are market animals, right? They are ultimately market animals that we bring to the show and they got to have those pieces- and combining those pieces all together is what I want to see. And I will tell you- I think maybe the trend is a little shorter body, smaller frame cattle- different maturity pattern in general. I prefer to have them a little longer and have a little extension to them yet keep that muscle and soundness to them."
Ward and Hays also talked about how desired cattle size has changed over the years and how cattle were got big- maybe too big and tall at one point- but have come back to a more "moderate" size and have a more correct relationship between body size and muscle and funtionality. Ward says he thinks we about where we need to be in cattle structure and size as he looks at our beef cattle breeds today.
