Fire Danger Worries Remain High- Especially for Wednesday of This Week
Tue, 01 Mar 2016 02:57:10 CST
Oklahoma Forestry Services (OFS) is asking Oklahomans to continue their vigilance as fire danger increases from high to extreme over the next few days, with Wednesday looking like the most critical day. Fire conditions will be the worse for the western two-thirds of the state.
"High winds, low relative humidity, clear skies and warm temperatures are working together to create dangerous fire conditions," said State Forester, George Geissler. "We want people to be aware of the conditions and postpone any outdoor burning until conditions improve."
In addition to avoiding doing anything that could spark a blaze, the public is also asked to quickly report any fire or smoke that they observe to the nearest fire department. Any fires that get started will burn swiftly, so the sooner firefighters are on the scene, the faster the fire can be contained.
Oklahoma Forestry Services is maintaining its state of preparedness, prepositioning firefighters to areas of greatest concern and utilizing additional resources including firefighters, dozers and engines from Arkansas Forestry Commission and the Tennessee Department of Agriculture Forestry Division. OFS is coordinating additional state and federal wildland fire resources, including air tankers and National Guard helicopters, and communicating with Oklahoma Emergency Management and fire departments across the state.
