Fires Burning in Northwest and Central Oklahoma Ahead of a Strong Cold Front

Tue, 05 Apr 2016 20:04:07 CDT

Fires Burning in Northwest and Central Oklahoma Ahead of a Strong Cold Front As fire weather conditions deteriorate, with dry and extremely gusty winds, new fires have started in multiple counties across Oklahoma. Here's the latest from the Oklahoma Forestry Services:

350 Complex Fires, Woodward County - Oklahoma Forestry Services has dispatched multiple aircraft, including two single engine air tankers (SEATs), and two CL-415 (Super Scoopers), firefighting task forces and its Incident Management Team to respond to large fires in Woodward County. Structures have been lost in this complex of fires. Oklahoma Forestry Services is working in unified command with Woodward Fire Department.

Meridian Fire, Logan County - Oklahoma Forestry Services has also dispatched a task force and two Oklahoma Air National Guard helicopters to a fire near Luther in Logan County and is working in unified command with the Guthrie Fire Department to suppress that fire. Structures have also been lost in this fire.

Multiple new fires have been reported in Oklahoma and Canadian counties and additional fires in Woodward County.

"Dangerous weather conditions have resulted in fire outbreaks across the state this afternoon," said George Geissler, Director of Oklahoma Forestry Services. "This is a fluid situation with fire conditions continuing to worsen, and we can't emphasis enough how important it is for everyone to be extremely careful with anything that could cause a spark."

While conditions will improve slightly tomorrow, warm temperatures, very dry fuels and continued strong winds will linger over the next couple of days. The public should not let its guard down until conditions improve significantly.

Everyone is encouraged to report any fire or smoke to their local fire departments and to avoid traveling near wildfires to keep roads clear for safety of the firefighters and emergency responders.

Oklahoma Forestry Services is the state's lead agency related to wildland fire prevention, protection and use. For additional information about wildfires, click here.
