Travel to DC to Lobby Congress is Worth the Time and Effort- Terry Detrick of AFR
Thu, 15 Sep 2016 06:12:01 CDT
Terry Detrick with the American Farmers and Ranchers says that he has been traveling to our nation's Capitol since the mid 1980s- advocating for farmers and ranchers as a part of both the National Association of Wheat Growers and later the Oklahoma Farmers Union/AFR. Has it been worth the time and investment? Detrick says that "Yes it does do good and yes, they do need to hear from us" dispite the fact that you may not see immediate results for your efforts.
Detrick and other AFR leaders participated in the National Farmers Union fall Legislative Fly In- being briefed by several USDA officials and others from the Obama Administration- as well as having the chance to spend time with most of the Oklahoma Congressional delegation. (Pictured here is Congressman Frank Lucas hearing from Detrick on the struggling farm economy.)
At the USDA, the group heard from and interacted with USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack. AFR Secretary Paul Jackson wrote on Facebook about farmers telling their story to the Secretary- "A lot of members spoke to the financial difficulties in farm country due to low cattle and grain prices and credit tightening, telling their story to Sec. Vilsack. A lot of impassioned remarks. Becoming very personal to farmers and ranchers who have lost significant equity this year."
Detrick says that he is surprised that AFR seemed to be first group from Oklahoma that is spreading the news of economic problems going on in Oklahoma Farm Country- and that there may well be a need to provide help to many farmers to help them survive low commodity prices in the months ahead.
As the trip wound down on Wednesday, AFR's Sam Knipp talked with President Detrick about the results of the trip- and the importance of engaging with lawmakers on the issues that impact your farm and ranch operation.
