Tulsa State Fair Grand Champion Steer Sells for $30,000 as LC Neel Buys Another One

The Tulsa State Fair Junior Livestock Show Sale of top animals from the 2016 Junior Market Show showed lots of support for the 4-H and FFA members who "made the sale" for the Thursday evening gala and auction event. Less than eight percent of the animals who participated in the 2016 Market Show qualified to be one of the 145 steers, barrows, wether lambs or goats that saw their 4-H and FFA owners offering them for sale at the Ford Truck Arena. (There were two pens of broilers that topped that show ahead of the sale.)

Sale prices of the top animals that led off the show were a little softer than the last two years, reflecting some of the pain seen in the economy. But, the longest number of consecutive years of participating in the Junior Livestock Sale by an individual continued- with LC Neel being a part of the buying consortiums that were in on the Grand and Reseve Grand Champion Steers- as well as the Reserve Grand Champion Meat Goat. The ninety one year old Neel was not sure how many years that 2016 was when it came to his buying of one or more of the top animals at the show- but his family believed it was at least half of his life- meaning over 45 years of participating at the Tulsa State Fair Junior Livestock Show.

It was told by sale officials after LC Neel was announced as being one of the buyers of the Grand Champion Market Steer(seen here)- that the long time supporter had invested over one and a half million dollars in the lives of young people by buying animals at the Junior Livestock Show over the last several decades.

The Grand Market Steer led off the sale- and Tommy Glover of Elgin 4-H sold his Chianina Champion for $30,000 to LC Neel, as well as to Farm Credit of Western Oklahoma and McDonalds. The young 4-H member from Comanche County has had a great 2016- showing the Reserve Grand Champion Market Steer at the Oklahoma Youth Expo back in March.

The Reserve Grand Champion Steer brought the second most of any animal in the sale- $20,000. Allyson Arthur of Chickasha grinned big as her steer was purchased by LC Neel and Paul Sizemore.

The Grand Champion Steer in 2015 was sold for $36,250.

The 2016 Grand Champion Market Barrow was brought into the ring by owner Shaynn McWirter from the Maysville FFA Chapter- and her barrow show for a total of $12,000- being purchased by the Oklahoma Pork Council and the Oklahoma Farm Bureau. The number two barrow in the show- the Reserve Grand Champion- was shown by 4-Her Faith Palmer of McCurtain County- Faith had a payday of $8,500- purchased by the Choctaw Nation and the Tulsa State Fair Ringmasters- the official support group of the Junior Livestock Show at the State Fair.

The Grand Champion Market Lamb was the third animal sold- and Kamden Urban of Mt. View-Gotebo FFA was rewarded for his success with a $10,000 bid for his lamb- offered by Cherokee Pride Construction. The Reserve Grand Champion Lamb was brought into the ring by owner Mylah testerman of Harmon County 4-H- her lamb sold for $7500 and was also purchased by Cherokee Pride Construction- along with the Oklahoma Farm Bureau.

The Grand Champion Market Meat Goat was also sold for a ten thousand dollar bid- with Hayley Lundry of Haworth FFA the owner of the Division Three Goat Champion who was named the best of the 446 Goats shown on Tuesday and Wednesday. Buying Hayley's goat was a group that included J&B Pump and Supply, Oklahoma AgCredit, AFR and Brad Gungoll.   The reserve Grand Champion Market Goat was shown by Mercedes Hollis of Lookeba- Sickles FFA- her goat went into the history books as yet another Champion bought by the 91 year old LC Neel- who partnered with the Ringmasters for that purchase.

The sale of the Champions for the Junior Livestock Show was wrapped up with the Pen of Broilers owned Emile Mittlestaedt of Amber- Pocasset FFA- this Champion Pen brought by Expo Serve for $4,000 while the Reserve Grand Champion Broiler Pen sold for $2,400- and was exhibited by Macy Bartee of Yukon FFA.
