Tulsa's New Mayor Seeks to Foster Cooperation Between Rural and Urban Communities in Oklahoma
Mon, 12 Dec 2016 16:42:30 CST
There was a lot of talk last Friday afternoon at the Tulsa Farm Show about residents from both rural and urban communities finding common ground. Associate Farm Director Carson Horn spoke with Tulsa's new mayor, G.T. Bynum, who attended the Rural to Urban Outreach reception at the farm show, hosted by American Farmers & Ranchers.
"It's just incredibly important that people understand - In Oklahoma where you have your urban areas and your rural areas - this is one state," Bynum said. "The fact is, what's good for rural America is good for Tulsa."
During his address at the reception, Bynum brought attention to the fact that much of Tulsa's assets are geared toward the agricultural sector including the Port of Catoosa, the country's largest inland port and distribution hub for ag products, and the city's higher education institutions that focus on innovation in the ag sector, especially rural healthcare.
"Rural Oklahoma doing well, especially in the agricultural space," Bynum said, "is incredibly important in the future growth of Tulsa."
AFR President Terry Detrick invited Mayor Bynum to attend the reception for a chance to visit with folks from the rural community. He says he is delighted with the results.
"He's very much in tune," Detrick said about the mayor. "He understands I believe and we're just thrilled to see him in the positon he's in. He took the time to come and meet with the agricultural sector and that's what it's all about for us - Rural areas and urban areas to accommodate one another. Form relationships where we can work together. And if we do that, we're going to be in good shape and we're going to see progress in Oklahoma."
