AFR Women Beat Their Goal in 2016 Drive Away Hunger Campaign

Thu, 29 Dec 2016 17:21:05 CST

AFR Women Beat Their Goal in 2016 Drive Away Hunger Campaign Donations to the 2016 AFR Women's Cooperative Drive Away Hunger campaign will provide approximately 129,000 meals for hungry Oklahomans.

"We had a goal of 50,000 meals," Suzanne Gilbert, AFR Women's Cooperative chair, said. "The fact we almost tripled our goal is a great testament to the generosity of our members."

Throughout 2016, AFR members, youth, agents and local volunteers gathered donations during county and statewide events.   Members were asked to bring nonperishable canned goods to county annual meetings, county fairs, and other local events. Youth at the annual leadership summit played a major role in meeting the Women's Cooperative goal.

The donations were collected and distributed to local and county food banks with cooperation from the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma and Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma.

"We are proud of the fact these donations stayed in our local communities," Gilbert said.

Gilbert added she was impressed by the variety of methods used to collect donations.

"At the beginning of the year we encouraged AFR members to find creative ways to help their communities," Gilbert said. "This turned out to be a very simple and efficient way to get our members involved and meet the needs of their local communities."

Awards for the group or individuals collecting the most donations will be announced at the AFR convention, Feb. 17-19, at the Embassy Suites Hotel and Conference Center, Norman, Okla.
