Oklahoma Remains Stuck in Drought Over Three Quarters of the State as the Curtain on 2016 Comes Down
Thu, 29 Dec 2016 17:26:31 CST
Compare the start of 2016 to the end of 2016- and across Oklahoma you will see no drought last January versus virtually a state totally covered with the colors of drought as we come to the end of December. The final Drought Monitor of 2016, seen above,. shows only five percent of the state not in at least an abnormally dry or worse rating as of December 27th. The extreme southwest corner of Oklahoma is not in drought or even abnormally dry- counties like Jackson, Harmon, Kiowa and Tillman are usually scrambling for enough moisture but as we end 2016- they are okay.
According to State Climatologist Gary McManus, "The amount of total drought (D1-D4) stayed about the same, but we did see an expansion of D2 (Severe Drought) of about 3.5 percent, and I think that was a bit conservative of an expansion due to the Holiday. My guess is that next week we will see an even larger expansion of drought of different intensity across the state. Seeing pictures like the one below from Logan County is eye popping."
