Incoming Administration Begins Work to Stop Overregulation of Federal Agencies Hurting Producers
Wed, 11 Jan 2017 12:43:26 CST
Lots of midnight regulations have been pushed by federal agencies as of late, even with the Obama administration on its way out the door. Environmental counsel to the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, Scott Yager, tells Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays, that the resulting overregulation of currently unchecked agencies is one of the biggest complaints NCBA is hearing from its members. He says the growing number of rules and regulations is hurting the way in which producers do business. But with the Republican Party taking over control of the administration, Yager says there is way to put a stop to and reverse this bureaucratic stranglehold affecting the industry. This strategy includes two bills being introduced called the Midnight Rule Relief Act and the Regulatory Accountability Act.
"These bills will provide more accountability and transparency in how agencies conduct rule makings," Yager said. "Also, it restores power back to Congress - instead of just having federal agencies having no check from Congress."
In addition, Yager explains the Regulatory Accountability Act will require agencies to choose the lowest cost rule making alternative and offer more opportunities for public vetting and review. He contends, too, that an important piece of this legislation is an amendment being made by the House Agriculture Committee's ranking member, Colin Peterson of Virginia.
"What the Peterson amendment would do is close that loophole," said Yager referring to a lobbying tactic by agencies lately, using social media to insight public commentary in favor for rules not thoroughly explained to those making the comments. "And, make sure that type of stuff doesn't happen again in the future."
Listen to Yager explain efforts being made in Washington to curb the outgoing administration's overregulation to Farm Director Ron Hays, on today's Beef Buzz.
