Oklahoma Drought Area Now Less Than Five Percent of State- Versus Over Eighty Percent at Start of 2017

Drought numbers continued to shrink in the latest Drought Monitor report released on Thursday morning- but dryness persists in parts of east central and southeastern Oklahoma- despite several rounds of rain in the state. According to Gary McManus, Oklahoma State Climatologist, this is the lowest amount of drought we've seen in the state since last summer- way back on June 28, 2016.
Drought now stands at 4.26%- versus the more than 83% drought at the start of this calendar year. The moderate drought being shown is found in a half dozen counties- when you add the abnormally dry rating in with the Moderate Drought- just over 15% of the state is those categories- compared to almost 95% of the state covered in Abnormally dry to Drought Ratings on the first of January.
McManus adds that given low chances for rain in the next few days in the areas where drought persists in the state- the remaining drought numbers will likely stay in place for the next couple of reports.
