NCBA President Craig Uden Addresses China's Announcement to Reestablish Beef Trade with US

Fri, 12 May 2017 14:59:16 CDT

NCBA President Craig Uden Addresses China's Announcement to Reestablish Beef Trade with US The National Cattlemen's Beef Association held a media conference call Friday morning to discuss the historic reopening of the Chinese market to American-produced beef. Kent Bacus, NCBA Director of International Trade and Market Access began the call with insights about the deal that has been struck between the US and China.

Following his summary statement, Bacus introduced Craig Uden, NCBA President and cattle feeder from Nebraska, to offer further remarks on the significance of this historic agreement.

The opening statements of Bacus and Uden can be read below:

Kent Bacus -

"Here are a few things you should know about this announcement.

"Last night, the Trump administration announced that one of the ten initial actions of the US-China Economic Cooperation 100 Day Plan, includes restoration of US beef to China.

"Obviously, we've waited 13 years for this development and now we're one step closer to seeing US beef into China. So, what does this mean?

"Well, if we look at the summary document that was released by the Department of Commerce, there are a few little clues that are there. First and foremost, there is one more round of technical consultations between the US and China, and secondly following those consultations, that China is to allow imports of US beef beginning as soon as possible or before a deadline of July 16, 2017.

"We're very excited about this development. This is another step closer to restoring access to China. As you will recall, back in September, the Ministry of Agriculture announced it was lifting the ban on US beef.

"And so, that was really the first step towards putting beef back on Chinese shelves. And now we've gone through the technical process. There's been a lot of discussions.

"Our government has visited and received visitors from the Chinese government and worked with them for the last several months to try to address all their questions and concerns.

"Given the diversity of our industry and the vastness of the Chinese economy and their regulatory schemes - this is obviously something that is taking a long time to discuss.

"But, we're very excited that this announcement is really a culmination of the recent meeting between President Trump and President Xi at Mar-a-Lago. And, we're excited that beef was the number one point of the ten points that were included in this 100-day plan.

"So, we're excited to learn more about this. We're excited to see the potential of US beef entering into China.

"And now I'd like to introduce Craig Uden, president of NCBA, to talk a little more about what this means to our industry. Craig."

Craig Uden -

"Thank you, Kent. Good morning everyone. Regaining access to the market in China has been a long priority for cattlemen and NCBA members in particular. We have been working closely with this administration in the process and will continue to be engaged as the negotiations are finalized.

"As Kent said, being locked out of the world's largest market for 13 years, we welcome this announcement and an agreement has been made to restore US beef to China.

"This is an issue we've been working on, as I said, for over a decade and it's great to see it come to fruition. Chinese market means access to 1.4 billion new customers of US beef.

"Right now, with a growing middle class that's larger than the entire United States' population, these middle-class consumers are buying record amounts of protein and China is becoming one of the greatest importers of beef in the world.

"With that said, with trade accounting for over $300 a head and growing demand internationally for US beef, that number will continue to grow, bringing more value back to the US cattle producers.

"This is really good news- great news, for the cattle producers and we appreciate the Trump administration for prioritizing US beef."
