Farmers Report Good ProgressThough Planting Pace Still Lags Average Levels in Latest Crop Report In the latest crop progress report released Monday May 15, 2017, the United States Department of Agriculture rates the US winter wheat crop condition at 51 percent good to excellent, with 32 fair, 12 poor and 5 very poor. Winter wheat headed was 63 percent compared to 66 percent this time last year and is 6 points above the five-year average. Corn planted at 71 percent, 2 points below this time last year and 1 point below the five-year average. Cotton planted rates at 33 percent and 5 points below last year and 4 points below the average. Finally, Sorghum planted rates 32 percent, 1 point above last year and 3 points behind the average. For the complete USDA Crop Progress report, click here.




According to the weekly crop progress report from USDA, Oklahoma winter wheat headed reached 94 percent, down 1 point from the previous year but up 3 points from normal. Canola coloring reached 60 percent. Corn emerged reached 58 percent, up 1 point from normal. Sorghum planted reached 29 percent, down 1 point from normal. Soybeans seeded reached 18 percent, down 8 points from the previous year and down 4 points from normal. Soybeans emerged reached 2 percent. Cotton planted reached 33 percent, up 15 points from the previous year and up 15 points from normal. Conditions of pasture and range were rated at 84 percent good to fair. In Kansas, winter wheat condition rated 10 percent very poor, 17 poor, 29 fair, 38 good, and 6 excellent. Winter wheat headed was 84 percent, near 87 last year, but ahead of the five-year average of 68. Coloring was 8 percent, near 4 last year. Corn planted was 60 percent, behind 78 last year and 72 average. Emerged was 34 percent, behind 49 last year and 42 average. Soybeans planted was 16 percent, near 13 last year, but behind 20 average. Emerged was 4 percent, near 1 last year and 5 average. Sorghum planted was 2 percent, equal to last year, and near 5 average. Cotton planted was 2 percent, near 3 last year, and behind 12 average. Pasture and range conditions rated 0 percent very poor, 3 poor, 18 fair, 64 good, and 15 excellent. To view the complete Kansas Crop Progress and Condition Report, click here.




In Texas, winter wheat condition was mostly fair to good statewide. Corn planting continued in the Northern High Plains. Cotton planting was underway in the High and Low Plains, the Blacklands, North East Texas and the Trans-Pecos. Sorghum was heading in the Coastal Bend. Some producers applied insecticides to sorghum fields to control sugarcane aphid populations. Pasture and range condition was rated good to fair statewide, but there were areas in Central and South Texas, where the pasture was drying up and even changing colors due to the lack of moisture. To sum up the current winter wheat crop condition here in the southern plains- here's the Good to Excellent Ratings for this week and the change from last week:




Oklahoma   48%      -1%
Kansas         44%      -2%
Texas           37%      -3%




The minor increase in the poor to very poor categories reflect some of the recent weather related damage across the Plains:




Oklahoma   18%     +2%
Kansas         27%     +0%
