Farmers Pray for Rain as Weekly Drought Monitor Reports Driest May-June Period on Record in State
Thu, 29 Jun 2017 11:23:52 CDT
Oklahoma State Climatologist Gary McManus has classified Oklahoma in a state of a flash drought, on this week's Mesonet Drought Monitor report.
The deficits that have accumulated over the last 60-day period has allowed for the rapid drying of topsoil throughout the state. In fact, since May 1, Oklahoma City's official rainfall measuring station has recorded only 1.19 inches of precipitation, making this the driest May 1 - June 29 on record, dating back as far as 1891.
This flash drought has occurred during Oklahoma's primary rainy season, which does not bode well as the full strength of summer heat has yet to arrive. If a significant rain event fails to arrive before summer's fury does, the threat of prolonged drought conditions could arise.
