Summer Sales Restriction on E15 Fuel Ends in One Week, with Consumer Choice Returning this Fall

Fri, 08 Sep 2017 11:58:03 CDT

Summer Sales Restriction on E15 Fuel Ends in One Week, with Consumer Choice Returning this Fall With one week to go before the official end of the summer sales restriction on fuel containing 15 percent ethanol (E15), the fuel choice has made an early return in all but two of the 29 states that offer E15.

On August 31, 2017, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) granted emergency waivers of certain fuel standards in areas affected by shortages caused by the impact of Hurricane Harvey. The EPA lifted the Reid Vapor Pressure (RVP) restriction in most states.

The rest of the country will be able to sell E15 fuel at the end of RVP season on September 16.

"Finally, we're seeing the return of consumer choice at fuel pumps across the country," said Growth Energy CEO Emily Skor. "E15 is a better choice for drivers who care about making less of an impact on the environment, getting better engine performance, and saving money at the pump. While we are glad that the summertime restriction on E15 will be over everywhere on September 16, fuel shortages from the devastating Hurricane Harvey are an unfortunate but important reminder that our fuel regulations are out of date and that homegrown biofuels are an at-the-ready source for America's energy needs."

Growth Energy has led the charge in pushing for a fix to the RVP law, and has strongly supported the Consumer and Fuel Retailer Choice Act (S. 517 and H.R. 1311), which would extend the RVP waiver to E15 and give American consumers access to a more affordable fueling option year-round.

"This common-sense, bipartisan fix would expand consumer choice and remove unnecessary burdens on retailers," Skor added. "The biofuels industry stands ready to do our part to raise awareness for consumers about their fuel choices and to help them understand that E15 is an excellent choice for anyone who drives a 2001 and newer car."
