This past week at the 2017 Oklahoma State Fair, Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays served as a judge for the "Cow to Cone" ice cream contest, sponsored by DairyMax. He took a moment to speak with his fellow judge and dairy producer from Pauls Valley, Debbie Arthur, about the contest and her involvement with Oklahoma's dairy industry. You can listen to their complete conversation by clicking or tapping the LISTEN BAR below at the bottom of the page.
"It gets milk out in front of the public," Arthur said, explaining why DairyMax got involved to help promote the contest. "Not just milk, but milk products - everybody enjoys ice cream and it's important that we make sure everybody is consuming their dairy products."
This is a message Arthur repeats frequently, as a dairy advocate and educator, who hosts learning sessions with elementary students in her area.
"My passion is taking my cows out to travel to the different outdoor classrooms and trying to educate the young people about where milk comes from," she said. "We go over all the foods that maybe over the course of that day they'll consume, that are related to the dairy foods group."
Arthur, along with her husband and one of her two sons, operate a small fifth-generation dairy near Pauls Valley, Okla. milking 100 cows, three times a day.
