STEM and Health Education Professionals Encouraged to Participate in AFBF's On The Farm Events

Thu, 02 Nov 2017 12:08:20 CDT

STEM and Health Education Professionals Encouraged to Participate in AFBF's On The Farm Events The American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture has announced three On The Farm professional development events for educators in 2018. The events are designed for those who work in STEM and health education and have a limited background in agriculture. Applications are now open, and can be found here.

"If you work as a STEM coordinator, health educator, instructional coach at a school district or teacher educator, this may be a great fit for you," said Christy Lilja, acting executive director of the Foundation. "On The Farm educational events provide a tremendous learning opportunity for non-formal educators as well, such as those who design learning experiences at museums and events that explore the application of STEM and health concepts in real life," she added.

The training was designed to bring science to life for participants with the help of American beef cattle ranchers, researchers, nutritionists and veterinarians. Two events will be held in 2018 for STEM education influencers and one event will be held specifically for health educators.

Selected participants will receive free registration, reimbursement of up to $750 for approved travel expenses and hotel accommodations for three nights and meals, in addition to educational supplies and resources. Continuing education units will be made available to attendees who complete the program.

These events are based on the success of national On The Farm education events facilitated by the Foundation for the past two years.

"This was the best professional development a teacher could ask for. It taught you information that you wish you could teach your students, and by attending this event you can!" said 2017 participant Michael Nicholson, program specialist, Stanislaus County Office of Education, California.

Visit the On The Farm resources page on the Foundation's website to apply and for additional information to build awareness, understanding and a positive public perception of agriculture through education.

The Beef Checkoff Program funded development of the On The Farm training and supporting resources. The Beef Checkoff Program, MyBeefCheckoff.com, was established as part of the 1985 farm bill. The checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. In states with qualified Beef Councils, states retain up to 50 cents of the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen's Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national checkoff program, subject to USDA approval.
