Checking In on the Beef Checkoff - Checkoff Promotion Turns Wild Success in Japan and Worldwide
Wed, 02 Jan 2019 10:51:54 CST
Checking In on the Beef Checkoff is a new series the Radio Oklahoma Ag Network and the Oklahoma Farm Report is proud to offer in partnership with the Oklahoma Beef Council. Over the next several weeks, we invite you to join us as we highlight some of the efforts being undertaken by the Beef Checkoff to promote beef on behalf of producers. This week, Heather Buckmaster, executive director of the Oklahoma Beef Council, visits with us about the exceptional performance of US beef exports this past year and the role the Beef Checkoff played in that success. Listen to Buckmaster speak with Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays about this topic, by clicking or tapping the LISTEN BAR below at the bottom of the page.
According to Buckmaster, 2018 was another record year for US beef exports. With US beef exports entering more than 80 countries worldwide, she says much of the value that is generated in these foreign markets is received by the producers. To magnify that impact as much as possible, the Beef Checkoff works in tandem with our leaders in the export business on a daily basis.
"Our efforts at the Beef Checkoff to promote US beef overseas add value back to Oklahoma beef producers' bottom line," Buckmaster said. "To put it into perspective, as of October 2018, the value per head for fed slaughter was valued at $320 per head, according to data from the USDA and compiled by the US Meat Export Federation (a contractor for the Beef Checkoff)."
In 2018 alone, the Oklahoma Beef Council helped fund multiple promotions in Japan. One was so successful in fact, it resulted in a major Japanese retailer to permanently add USDA Prime Chuck Eye Roll as a main item in their product line.
