Oklahoma agriculture's newest coalition was born out of a desire for mentorship.
"Having a mentor can be a helpful resource in the professional world," said Brandi Herndon, Agri-8 member. "We wanted to create a network of mentors specifically for women in agriculture."
Agri-8 is a group of professional women in agriculture who desire to give young women the support to succeed as professionals and the tools to effectively communicate about the agriculture industry, and the inspiration to live the agriculture lifestyle with passion and purpose.
As its inaugural event the Agri-8 is proud to present ENGAGE, a strategic agricultural retreat. In addition to the opportunity to network with professional women in agriculture, the agenda for the two-day retreat includes presentations on media training, workplace communication, consumer communication and personal branding.
"Agriculture can always benefit from educated, articulate and relatable spokespeople, or in this case, spokeswomen," said Kirby Smith, Agri-8 member. "We created this retreat as a way to encourage young women who share our passion for the industry and prepare them to engage in meaningful conversations about agriculture."
Retreat attendees will participate in mock media interviews and hear information helpful for transitioning from the classroom to the workplace. They will also learn how to tailor their message based on the audience and align their brand with their personal and professional goals.
Eligible applicants must currently be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program in a college, university or technical school. Applications are due Feb. 2 and can be found at www.agri-8.com. Candidate interviews will be held in February. The retreat will take place April 13-14 in rural Oklahoma.
Agri-8 was formed in 2017. Its founding members are Blayne Arthur, Brooke Clay, Meriruth Cohenour, Brandi Herndon, Jen Howard, Rebecca McMillan, Kass Newell and Kirby Smith. Additional information can be found on Agri-8's website or by contacting any of the members.
