The PED Poland Edition of the Oklahoma Youth Expo Recap for March 21st

Lots to report in our recap of the Oklahoma Youth Expo on this Thursday morning, March 21st. The Night of Stars was our top story to lead with- but now it's the official word from State Vet Dr. Rod Hall about the discovery of PED at State Fair Park. (and we go back a couple of nights and feature a pic this morning of Senator James Lankford who participated in the Legislative and Celebrity Showmanship Contest)
Here's what he said in an email this morning:
"Please be aware that there has been a diagnosis of PED virus at the Oklahoma Youth Expo. Several pigs have become ill and we assume that most pigs that were at the show or are there now have been exposed.
"PED is not a human health risk. Pork products from exposed swine are safe for consumption when properly prepared. The disease causes a transient illness in feeder pigs and mature swine. In baby pigs it can cause up to 100% mortality. It is very contagious and can be transmitted easily on fomites.
"If you have clients, friends, or other stakeholders who have pigs please let them know that if they've been to OYE they should take extreme biosecurity measures to prevent introducing the disease into their pigs at home, especially if they have sows that have farrowed or are due to farrow.
"Please remain vigilant in looking for foreign animal diseases. It's possible that diseases such as African Swine Fever or Classical Swine Fever could initially present with severe diarrhea that could be mistaken for PED. Most pigs older than 8 weeks of age recover from PED but do not recover from ASF and CSF. If you are aware of unusual cases of illness in swine please let us know."
Now- let's turn to the Night of Stars:
Records fell at the 2019 Oklahoma Youth Expo's Night of Stars Gilt Sale on Wednesday evening- 115 lots that came from the OYE Gilt shows at the front end of the Expo sold for $545,000- that smashes the previous record by a wide margin. (We had reported earlier that the last couple of years- the total for the sale was around $400,000)
And the HIGHEST selling Poland China Gilt ANYWHERE in breed history was sold in the middle of the evening. Lot 72, owned by Hadley Cooper of Amber-Pocasset FFA, was the fifth Poland gilt chosen for the sale- and she brought $40,000 for her owner. Foote Farms was the breeder of the gilt- the Pedigree shows a Nailed It X Voodoo lineage. Cooper's gilt was the highest selling Poland gilt anywhere and was easily the highest selling gilt in the history of the Night of Stars Gile Sale at the Oklahoma Youth Expo.
As has been the case in previous years- and especially this year- the bidders trumped the judges on the worth of more than one of the gilts picked for the sale. It re-enforces that if you are in the Gilt show in future years- if you get picked for the show- even towards the bottom- the right pedigree can earn you a very nice payday.
Now before the Hadley Cooper gilt stole the show- the Commercial Gilts had the high ground when it came to the most generous bids of the night- The Reserve Supreme Champion Commercial Gilt shown by Adison Thompson of Noble 4-H sold for $32,000 and two other Commercial Gilts sold in the twenties. It was actually the second day of showing on Wednesday in the Market Hog show at the 2019 Oklahoma Youth Expo- but for the other three species- yesterday was opening day for the competition in Steers, Market Lambs and Wether Goats.

Showing continues today- and ALL of the Champions will be gathered for the GRAND DRIVE this evening at the State Fair Arena- Scholarships are handed out starting at 5:30 PM and the Grand Drive celebration follows- that timing assuming the Market Steer Show is done by then- it was a LONG day yesterday for the Steer Show as it was after 8 before things were concluded in the Big House.
