Passing of Mona Lee Brock Stirs Fond Memories of Deceased's National Farm Crisis Hotline Legacy

Mona Lee (Bruster) Brock passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at the age of 87. Born on January 1, 1932 to Floyd and Ada Bell Bruster in Madill, Oklahoma, she was raised in Marshall county and graduated from Kingston High School. She married F.M. Brock in Gainesville, Texas on July 12, 1947. Mrs. Brock attended Southeastern State College obtaining a Bachelor's of Science in Education in 1964. She furthered her education earning a Master's in Education from the University of Oklahoma in 1967. Mona Lee worked as a teacher mainly in the Moore Public School system. The Brocks moved back to Marshall county after Mona Lee retired from teaching.
During the farm crisis in the 1980s, she began volunteering for the Oklahoma Conference of Churches at the National Farm Crisis Center Hotline to assist at risk farmers and ranchers. She personally handled thousands of calls from desperate and suicidal farmers and ranchers who were losing their livelihood. As an advocate for farmers, Mona Lee was called "the angel at the other end of the line" by her friend and country music legend Willie Nelson. Mona testified before the Congressional and Senate Agricultural Committees and has spoken to numerous farm groups and organizations across the country. Mrs. Brock received numerous service awards and humanitarian accolades, the latest being a Citation in 2018 from the Oklahoma House of Representatives. Additionally, Mona Lee was featured in many Farm Aid documentaries and literatures. She was a member of the Madill Baptist Church until she moved to Durant to be closer to her family in 2006 when she joined Fairview Baptist Church. In addition to loving the farmers of America, she was an accomplished cook, talented seamstress, and brilliant storyteller. Mona Lee adored her family, especially her boys.
Mona Lee was the mother of the late Gary Don Brock, the grandmother of Heather Dawn, and the great grandmother to Elijah and Riley.
Mona Lee was mother to Ronny Lee Brock, the mother-in-law to Terry, Granny Brock to granddaughter Alissa, and great grandmother to Azure and Raiden.
Mona Lee Brock is survived by her son Ronny Lee Brock, wife Terry, of Caddo, OK, sister Barbara Ann Robertson, Midwest City, sister in laws Alice Bruster, Roff, OK and Sharlene Bruster, Collinsville, OK, her granddaughters, great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, her husband F.M., her son Gary, her brothers Clarence, Orval, Buddy, Floyd Jr, and Tommie Lee Bruster, and her sisters Ruth McPherson and Wanda Sue Causey.
Visitation is scheduled for Friday, March 22nd, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. at Watts Funeral Home, 707 Highway 70 East, Kingston. Funeral services are Saturday, March 23 at 1 p.m. at the Watts Funeral Home in Kingston.
Casket Bearers for the service include Jim Morgan, Ray Bruster, Mike McPherson, Jimmy Morgan, Matthew Bruster and Rodd Wellington with Honorary Bearers Wayne Allen, Max Glenn, Orla Ratliff, Willie Nelson, Glenn Wallace and Ted Riddle.
