Oklahoma Pork Council, Oklahoma Blood Institute Team Up for Annual Memorial Day Blood Drive

Fri, 17 May 2019 14:30:21 CDT

Oklahoma Pork Council, Oklahoma Blood Institute Team Up for Annual Memorial Day Blood Drive For the past 13 years, the Oklahoma Pork Council and the Oklahoma Blood Institute have teamed up for the annual Memorial Day Blood Drive held the last week of May. This year's event will be held on May 23-25 and includes the theme "Give Local."

There will be three mobile drives located at: Tinker Federal Credit Union in Moore, Okla., Cabela's in northern OKC and at the Route 66 Festival in Clinton, Okla. A menu of pork carnitas and pork burgers will be served to donors in appreciation for giving blood along with a free "Go Pig or Go Home" t-shirt.

"We urgently need people to give before and during Memorial Day weekend. The lives of patients could easily be in jeopardy without help before this first summer holiday," said John Armitage, M.D., president and CEO of Oklahoma Blood Institute. "We are truly grateful for those who take just an hour of their time to help patients in our area."

Historically, Oklahoma Blood Institute sees a decline in donations around holidays, but the potential for emergencies increases. Every drop of blood needed by patients in 90% of the state's hospitals comes from the Oklahoma Blood Institute's volunteer donors. Those with negative blood types are especially urged to give. Each blood donation saves up to three lives.

Appointments are not required but can be made at obi.org or by calling 877-340-8777.

"It is a priority of okPORK to provide assistance where there is need and we know how critical donating blood is in Oklahoma," said Roy Lee Lindsay, executive director at okPORK. "The blood drive is important because it saves lives and allows okPORK to reach out to the community."
