NSAC Says Renewed Focus on Climate Change Presents Opportunities for Sustainable Agriculture

Tue, 21 May 2019 12:38:36 CDT

NSAC Says Renewed Focus on Climate Change Presents Opportunities for Sustainable Agriculture Today, the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, & Forestry held a hearing regarding "Climate Change and the Agriculture Sector" to explore the role America's farmers and ranchers play in addressing climate change mitigation and adaptation. In response, the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC) delivered a formal statement to the Committee, as well as the following remarks:

"Farmers and ranchers aren't just on the frontlines when it comes to the devastating effects of climate change, they're also critical to our ability as a nation to successfully adapt to and mitigate the effects of a changing climate," said Alyssa Charney, NSAC Senior Policy Specialist. "NSAC is pleased to see discussions of climate change becoming more prevalent on the national stage, and we applaud Chairman Pat Roberts (R-KS) and Ranking Member Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) for holding this hearing and for helping to underscore the important connection between agriculture and a more sustainable food and farm future.

NSAC is proud to have helped secure many important provisions to help farmers and ranchers address climate change in the 2018 Farm Bill, and is committed to working with USDA, Congress, and our members across the country to ensure that those provisions are effectively implemented in the years ahead. We also know that further investment is needed for these programs to reach their full potential. NSAC urges Congress to support and invest in American farmers and ranchers by providing them with the tools and resources they need to advance conservation activities, lead research projects, and build resilience on their lands."
