Rural Broadband and GPS- Both Essential for Precision Ag on Today's Farm or Ranch- Both Under the Watchful Eye of Congressman Frank Lucas
Sun, 21 Jul 2019 19:32:51 CDT
As America celebrates the Apollo landing on the moon of fifty years ago, Oklahoma Congressman Frank Lucas says his role as the top Republican on the House Science Committee provides opportunity for him to be an agricultural advocate in the current activities of NASA, the National Weather Service and more. The Congressman tells Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays that these agencies and others offer access to GPS, broadband and more to the farm- essential to accurate weather forecasting, Precision Ag for crop and livestock operations. Congressman Lucas and Hays talked on the sidelines of the 2019 Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association Convention ahead of his keynote address to the cattlemen and cattlewomen on Friday afternoon.
Congressman Lucas says short term and long term weather forecasting is vital to farmers and ranchers- and says he is advocating for the National Weather Service to have the resources and tools they need to get the job done.
Rural broadband is another area he is focusing on- saying "if you don't have broadband, how do you expect a young person to do their homework...how do you do business anywhere in the world if you can't reach out to the global web...farmers need to know the latest market information and more." The Congressman adds rural broadband will help local communities survive and keep their young people home- "The younger generation have expectations that all of this will be available and if its not- they are not going to live in the rural area- and these best and brightest - we need them in rural America- rural Oklahoma."
