Last Saturday evening, Charlie Swanson of Roosevelt, Okla. was named Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association's (OCA) Cattleman of the Year. The award is the highest honor that the OCA bestows upon a member and was designed to recognize OCA members who have made significant contributions to the OCA and to the Oklahoma beef industry.
"Charlie Swanson is one of the most involved and passionate members of the OCA. He spent two -years leading this association as President and served as the Southwest District Vice President prior to his presidential term," said Mike Weeks, OCA President. "Charlie believes that the membership is the backbone of the organization and, still today, is always working to add young families to the OCA so the organization will continue to be of value for many generations to come."
A review of Charlie's career reveals his talent for working with people and enthusiasm to help others. Throughout his career, Charlie worked as a Vocational Agriculture Instructor, an OSU County Extension Agent and he eventually moved into banking with agriculture related duties. The last part of his career, he managed Farmer's Cooperatives in Southwest Oklahoma.
While Charlie changed roles within his career several times, one thing that remained constant was the time, resources and energy he invested in building his farming and ranching operation. With the help of his two sons they managed to work cattle, plant wheat, and other crops on late nights and weekends. About the year 2000, Charlie and his wife, Mary, built their home on the ranch and took over the full-time operations and management. Since then, they have acquired new properties and leases. The cow herd has expanded, the stocker operation has grown, and bred heifer sales have increased. The ranch now has around 10,000 acres of cropland and pasture.
"I personally respect and admire Charlie's humble leadership and forward thinking. I cannot think of a more deserving OCA member to receive this award," said Weeks.
