OSU Division of Ag Thankful for the Millions Poured Into Chairs, Professorships and Scholarships by T Boone Pickens

Thu, 26 Sep 2019 05:31:08 CDT

OSU Division of Ag Thankful for the Millions Poured Into Chairs, Professorships and Scholarships by T Boone Pickens As Oklahoma State University held a Celebration of Life Service for T. Boone Pickens on Wednesday, there was a lot of emphasis on what was accomplished with the support of Mr. Pickens within the Athletic Department- but the support of this man who loved the University in Stillwater was felt in every College on campus, including in the College of Agriculture and the Division of Agriculture. Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays talked with Dr. Tom Coon, Dean and Vice President of the Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources at OSU about the millions of dollars that have improved the Division in a lot of different ways. You can listen to their conversation by clicking on the LISTEN BAR at the bottom of this story.

According to information from the OSU Foundation, there are fifty scholarships associated with the Pickens Legacy Scholarship Match Funds and twenty five Pickens Matched Chairs and Professoships within the OSU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

Many of these Chairs and Professorships were established with donations gathered with the incentive that they would become eligible for those dollars promised by Boone Pickens. Plant Breeding, Ag Leadership, Ag Education, Animal Science, Plant and Soil Sciences and more- the list goes on and on of the endowments that were established that will continually offer support for these areas with the incentive that helped bring together the money in the first place- all coming from the promise of that "Pickens Match."

Here is the list of the Chairs and Professorships within the College of Agriculture that qualified for the Pickens match, often doubling the money given by other donors:

Dr. Coon says the resources that have been provided by a wide variety supporters, encouraged in many cases by the Pickens Match, has made a difference in getting the best talent to consider being a part of the OSU College of Ag Faculty- "We have a great reputation in agriculture- but a lot of other Universities do as well- so you got to have some upper hand to be able to attract top scientists here at Oklahoma State- and his investment has really helped us do that.
