One of those high achievers was Gabby Barber of Lawton FFA, winning in the Agricultural Communications- Entrepreneurship/Placement.
Gabby Barber has a supervised agricultural experience (SAE) that is rooted in photography, writing and, speaking with others. She got her start as chapter reporter but grew that into becoming chief editor of her chapter newsletter and collaborating with the communications department for her school district to share information about the agricultural education program. Barber is supported by her parents, Felesha and Cary, and her FFA advisors, Pete Dempsey, Christopher Conway, Lindsey Hoerbert, and Courtney Miller. Sponsored by Bader Rutter and Associates, Inc. and Red Brand.
After receiving the award, Barber talked with FFA Broadcast Intern about the Championship- you can hear that conversation by clicking on the LISTEN BAR below.
The Agricultural Proficiency Awards honor FFA members who, through their Supervised Agricultural Experiences have developed specialized skills that they can apply toward their future careers. Students can compete for awards in 47 areas covering everything from Agricultural Communications to Wildlife Management. Each award area has two categories, placement and entrepreneurship- although in some award area- those two categories are combined.
Placement proficiency awards are given to those whose SAEs are related to employment, apprenticeships, or internships at an agribusiness or agriculture-related organization. Entrepreneurship proficiency awards are given to those whose SAEs are related to ownership of an agribusiness or agriculture-related organization. Proficiency awards are given out at the local, state and national levels.
Judging occurred in Indianapolis during the 92nd National FFA Convention & Expo, Oct. 31-Nov. 2, with the winners announced during an onstage ceremony on Friday, Nov. 1.
