Oklahoma Angus Breeder John Pfeiffer Looks Back at His Year Serving as President of the American Angus Association
Mon, 04 Nov 2019 15:01:45 CST
Oklahoma Angus Producer John Pfeiffer is wrapping up his year as President of the American Angus Association. Pfeiffer will be handing over the gavel to a new President once elections are complete on Monday afternoon in Reno at the 2019 American Angus Association Convention in Reno, Nevada.
Pfeiffer tells Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays that he has actually served nine years on the Association Board- and has also served on the Certified Angus Beef Board as well. Pfeiffer is proud that the year he was the Chairman of the CAB Board- the branded beef program reached the one billion pound sales mark for the first time. Those numbers have continued to grow- and in the fiscal year just ended at the start of Octonber, the sales numbes are now at 1.25 billion pounds of Certified Angus Beef sold- domestically and internationally.
Pfeiffer is also excited about the move during his year as President to hire a new Chief Executive Director for the Angus Association- Mark McCully who comes from within the Angus family- as he had served many years as a part of the Certified Angus Beef team.
Pfeiffer said that Angus Seedstock Producers have done their part in helping upgrade the genetics of their cattle- and of the cattle owned by their commercial cow- calf operators. He tells Hays that has helped qualify more cattle for the Certified Angus Beef program- increasing the pounds available to sell dramatically- "In this last ten year span- we have went from acceptance rates of 15% to acceptance rates of over 35%- that's due to breeders and genetics."
Pfeiffer also talked about the genomic EPDs helping improve the genetics. And he adds that the mission statement for the Certified Angus Beef program is all about improving the bottom line for Angus breeders- "It's driven the sale of Registered Angus bulls. And that's why Certified Angus Beef was created. The whole goal behind it was to increase the value of registered Angus cattle."
