New Ag Risk Viewer Tool Assists Industry Stakeholders Map Out Crop Loss and Insurance Trends
Tue, 05 Nov 2019 07:53:51 CST
On the latest episode of the Southern Plains Podcast, host Clay Pope visits with Julian Reyes, Research Fellow with the Southwest Climate Hub, about the Ag Risk Viewer. The Southwest Hub developed this tool to analyze data from the USDA Risk Management Agency (RMA). With this tool, stakeholders can better observe crop insurance loss trends over time by commodity at either the county or state level. (The viewer can be accessed at https://swclimatehub.info/rma/). Julian also talks about the work of the Southwest Hub and some of the climate related issues facing agriculture in his region.
According to Reyes, the data that is utilized by this tool has previously been available on the internet but through platforms not well suited for easy access. He says the Ag Risk Viewer has brought that information to life and compiled it with user-friendliness in mind.
"Folks can access, discover and really visualize the crop insurance loss data," Reyes said, explaining how a user can explore the top causes of crop loss and damage county by county across the nation. "It's interesting to see these patterns across the landscape and we think that this information is valuable to decision makers in terms of how they look into the future and mitigate against weather or climate perils in the future."
