Mon, 16 Dec 2019 15:42:25 CST
For the ninth year- the folks at the Oklahoma National Stockyards stopped their final sale of the year and did a special fundraiser for the All American Beef Battalion (SteaksForTroops.Com) that was founded by Bill Broady from western Kansas- The 670 pound calf was sold 20 times and then additional dollars were pledged as well midday in the sale arena- and then the calf was actually sold to raise more money for the AABB- $3.05 a pound! As of mid afternoon, the 2019 total has virtually matched 2018 with $48,858 counted thus far, with Debbie Wedel expecting additional pledges to be coming in.
The calf that was auctioned again was donated by 3C Cattle Feeders and the Clyde Runyan family of Mill Creek, Oklahoma. A very special thanks go out to Clyde and Penny, along with their sons, who have donated the calf for 7 years. Clyde was with the 101st Airborne in Vietnam and considered this a privilege to be able to give back to the troops. Runyan passed away earlier in 2019- and his family wanted to continue the legacy of donating the calf in his honor.
Ahead of the Monday afternoon fundraiser, Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays talked with Broady, who returned to watch the sale in 2019 after being unable to attend last December. Click on the LISTEN BAR below to hear their complete conversation that covers the founding of the AABB and why this is one of the passions of Bill Broady's life. Broady told Hays that AABB has fed close to a half million troops and families coming back from deployment. With Steak Feeds in 26 states
Robert York, CEO of National Livestock Credit Corporation. says "This is the 9th year for the National Livestock companies to be involved in supporting the All American Beef Battalion. With the 2018 auction bringing in more than $49,000, contributors to this event have raised over $428,000 from the annual auction of a donated calf. The December fundraiser in Oklahoma City at the Stockyards is annually their biggest single money raising event!
"Many organizations and individuals have joined together for this worthy cause each year. The efforts of many have made this successful and we thank all our partners and friends for their help. Through these auctions, approximately 42,800 troops have been fed an American ribeye steak upon their return home from deployment."
