Casey Kinler is Communications Manager with the Animal Agriculture Alliance- she talked recently with our own KC Sheperd about the need for cattle producers to tell their story via social media, and she says it's worth your time to learn to do that even if you are not an avid social media person, "Yeah I think you know they're not alone. A lot of people don't like social media, but unfortunately, it's here to stay. So if you want your business to be here to stay as well, then you need to get on social media because that's where the consumers are. So get on there, it doesn't matter what age you are, it doesn't matter if you're a beginner, have no clue how to do Facebook or Twitter, Instagram, you know you can start. So the Alliance has a lot of resources for those beginners to get started on social media."
Kinler says step one is to just to pick one platform and get started, "You don't need to be an expert at it you don't want to you know be an expert on all the different platforms. Start slow; you know the key is consistency, so you don't want to overwhelm yourself. Just pick one platform. If you're not sure which one to pick, I would recommend Facebook. That's where most of the consumers are today. Get on there and really be yourself, you know, don't try to make up this whole you know persona just be yourself. People want real people. They want to hear from real farmers, so just get on there and share what you do. A lot of times, it's not really about the content you share, it's about what values come across with that content. So just be yourself share what you're doing. Take a step back and make sure that you know, Does this look bad? Is this going to raise some questions? Do I need to explain the picture further before you post it? So there's those types of things where you can reach out to the Animal Ag Alliance for help."
With social media, producers can talk about their products, sell their products, and grow their business by reaching a new audience. Kinler says itís also an essential platform to squash rumors, "It's honestly not only a good opportunity to dispel some of those myths out there that I think farmers and ranchers definitely get heated up about. But it's also a great way to grow your business. You know, if you want to market to the local population in your community, it's a great way for you to put yourself on the map, put yourself in front of those people. A lot of people are very interested in food. Maybe they're a foodie, you know they follow a lot of food things on social media, but when you ask them you know, do you follow a farmer? They kind of look at you like, oh, there are farmers on social media? So just getting out there. Put yourself in front of people, and you don't always have to be talking about farming, just talk about your everyday life. You know, if you're really into fitness or you're for book club, you know you're really big into church, whatever it might be, find other ways to relate to those people and, you know, weaving the farming message throughout those messages."
