Dr. Michelle Calvo-Lorenzo Says Animal Welfare Starts with the Animal Handler
Wed, 26 Feb 2020 09:13:17 CST
In today's Beef Buzz, Ron Hays talks with Dr. Michelle Calvo-Lorenzo, Chief Animal Welfare Oofficer for Elanco. Oklahomans may remember her during her tenure in the Animal Science department at Oklahoma State University. Dr. Calvo-Lorenzo said animal well-being starts with the people responsible for caring for the animals.
A culture of animal well being must be established in your workforce, she said. The team of workers must understand why animals are vaccinated and handled safely.
Many critics of animal agriculture often use videos of animals being abused by workers. Dr. Calvo-Lorenzo said your workforce should not tolerate anyone coming in and abusing animals.
This reflects negatively on not just the animal industry but the workers themselves, she noted.
The former OSU animal scientist said the industry is doing a better job of installing animal welfare standards and producing more tools in multiple languages to increase awareness and implement better handling practices.
"Helping people understand how what and why is key," she said.
