Best of Wheat Bread Baking Contest Cancelled at County and State Level for 2020

Tue, 21 Jul 2020 15:36:19 CDT

Best of Wheat Bread Baking Contest Cancelled at County and State Level for 2020 With the State Fair of Oklahoma cancelled for 2020- most of the competitive events associated with agriculture are also off the table for 2020. And that now officially includes the Statewide "Best of Wheat" Baking Contest that traditionally is a part of the final weekend at the State Fair.

Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays talked with Executive Director Mike Schulte about the decision to cancel- including the decision to not have the contest around the same time offsite from State Fair Park.

In a letter sent earlier in July by the Oklahoma Wheat Commission to OSU County Extension offices and to other supporters of the annual contest- the decision was explained: "Times are changing very quickly with activities that include larger groups of people in attendance. At the June 30th meeting, the OK Wheat Commission met with their board and it was determined that in light of the Oklahoma State Fair closing and ripple effects it is having on county fairs, they felt that it is in the best interest of all of the great people that participate in the fairs and help make them happen, that we have cancelled the entire "Best of Wheat" bread baking competition at the county and state level this year due to the continuing spikes with COVID-19 and the uncertainty for the fall months. This decision was not taken lightly, as each year we strive to have the best bread baking contest across the counties and at our state competition."
