Fire Danger Concern Today Across the State With Burn Bans for Cimarron, Texas, Beaver, Dewey and Major Counties
Thu, 09 Jul 2020 08:58:44 CDT
Looking at The latest Fire Situation Report for July 8, for the State of Oklahoma Shows Burn Bans in Cimarron, Texas, Beaver, Major & Dewey Counties.
Statewide Discussion: Increasing temperatures and predominantly dry conditions in the west will prompt gradually increasing fire danger in the days to come. Some rain/storm chances are in place over the next few days with best opportunity in northcentral and northeastern Oklahoma. Given the scattered nature of recent rains, fuel moisture improvement in the drought impacted areas has been variable. Hot temperatures in the next several days will contribute to enhanced drying of fuels.
Today: Fire danger concern today will be tempered across much of the state with elevated dew point temperature preventing afternoon relative humidity values from falling below 30% in all but the extreme northwest and Panhandle counties. Recent
rainfall has prompted some live herbaceous fuels improvement noting that those improvements are dependent upon the amount and duration of the rains. Initial attack actions on new wildfires are expected to be largely successful.
· Oklahoma Panhandle: Dry conditions this afternoon in the western Panhandle will initiate strong drying conditions.
Temperatures 100?-103? combined with afternoon relative humidity values 8-13% will prompt increasing fuels availability. Southwest winds sustained 9-13 mph with some higher gusts are expected. Again, recent rains have prompted some herbaceous fuel moisture improvements although the area is still suffering from drought impacts.
Rates of fire spread on any new fire are expected to be moderated in comparison to recent fire activity in the area exhibiting 51-65 ft./min. with head fire flame lengths 5-7 ft. Pinyon/Juniper fuels remain likely to exhibit problematic fire
behavior including single and group tree torching.
Near-term Outlook: The forecasted heat wave merits attention with regard to potential increasing fire danger in the coming days. Live-herbaceous and composite fuel moisture indices have expressed improvement in recent days with scattered rainfall
and elevated atmospheric moisture although that improvement will be tested in the coming days with ramped up rates of evapotranspiration, especially in the areas of the state where severe and extreme drought indices are present. While no critical
fire weather is in the current forecast and fuels have improved to some extent, close attention to the impacts of the drying potential is merited. Based on the current evaluation of the fire environment and predicted signals, the focal areas for potential
fire danger concerns in the near-term reside in the far northwestern and Panhandle counties as well those areas in southwestern Oklahoma where recent rainfall was not realized.
