OCA Convention On Schedule For July 24-25, Tulsa, So Producers Can "Lean on Pickup" To Discuss Issues

Tue, 07 Jul 2020 13:55:57 CDT

OCA Convention On Schedule For July 24-25, Tulsa, So Producers Can Oklahoma cattle producers will get the chance to “lean on the pickup” and talk about issues important to the industry during the 68th annual meeting of the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association, July 24-25 at the Tulsa Southern Hills Marriott.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced OCA to change venues from their traditional site in Norman but Michael Kelsey, OCA executive director, says OCA members are looking forward to the change of scenery. Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays talked to Kelsey about the upcoming convention.

We’ve been overwhelmed by the positive response, Kelsey said.

People are telling us they want to meet in person and discuss the issues and that’s what we’re planning to do, Kelsey said.

The OCA leader said cattle producers have been busy reading information and participating in virtual Zoom meetings the past several months but by nature they like to lean on the pickup and talk about finding solutions to tough issues.

There are a lot of opportunities out there and learn about these we must meet in person, he said.

Kelsey said they have an impressive line up of speakers and a high-quality trade show to benefit convention goers.

The guest speakers include Kent Bacus, NCBA senior director of international trade and market access, Sara Scott, vice president of foodservice for the Certified Angus Beef Brand, Dr. Sara Place, Elanco Animal Health, and Marty Smith,
Florida rancher and NCBA president.

Kelsey said some of the key issues to be discussed include the Secure Beef Plan, traceability, the farm bill, ethanol, truth in labeling and catastrophic risk.

Kelsey said there will be some adjustments due to the pandemic.

We will be the first group using the hotel after a remodel, so that will be exciting, he said. Also, we won’t have buffet meals and probably no self-service coffee stations.

Kelsey emphasized this is a great opportunity for cattle producers to come together during a really tough time.

We do that better when we’re together, he said.
