On August 7, 2020, okPORK will honor Cristina Carmona of Prestage Farms with their Excellence Award during the 61st annual Oklahoma Pork Congress.
Carmona grew up in Chihuahua Mexico and traveled to the United States to obtain a master's degree at New Mexico State University in animal science. In 2005 she was recruited by Murphy Brown, now Prestage Farms, and has been involved with the swine industry ever since.
Carmona is the production technical trainer, and is responsible for recruiting international workers, certifications, and conducting onsite assessments.
"I had never worked with pigs before," Carmona said. "But once I got here, I don't see myself doing something different."
Robert Teel, sow production manager, and Greg Stephens, general manager, at Prestage Farms, located in Texhoma, Oklahoma, nominated Carmona for this award.
"Cristina has become a vital part of this operation," Teel said. "She has a great feel for how we as a company are doing in regard to the employees' overall engagement and satisfaction.
Carmona said she was very excited when she found out she would be named the 2020 Excellence Award Winner.
"I am very grateful for the opportunity to come to the United States and work in the swine industry," she said. "It means a lot to me."
okPORK established the Excellence Award in 2018 to recognize individuals in all areas of pork production for an exceptional commitment to doing their best every day. Winners can come from any sector of pork production. These pig farmers have made their role in the pork industry more than just a job they consider being part of the pork industry a profession.
