OSU's Kim Anderson Talks about the $5.00 Wheat Price

Thu, 08 Oct 2020 16:42:44 CDT

OSU's Kim Anderson Talks about the $5.00 Wheat Price Oklahoma State University Extension Grains Market Analyst Dr. Kim Anderson talks about what is going on in the Wheat Markets weekly on SUNUP.

This week Dr. Andreson talks about the price of wheat getting above the $5.00 mark, "I think $5.00 is a big deal. There's a lot going on in the market right now. I think the biggest thing is the importers are buying massive amounts of wheat. Egypt usually has a 3 to 4 month storage, they are now shooting for a 6 months storage, so there's real strong export demand, and that export demand is for bread-flower wheat." This week on SUNUP, Misha Manuchehri explains what happens to herbicides when rain is limited.

- Then, Josh Lofton has an update on summer crops and describes a study underway to find the lowest viable planting rate of cover crops.

- In the Mesonet weather report, Wes Lee shows us how temperatures compare to average. Gary McManus says drought is expected to expand.

- Derrell Peel says drier conditions across the Southern Great Plains could impact cattle markets. He also explains why producers may not see a price benefit when selling heavier cattle.

- In Cow-Calf Corner, Glenn Selk explains how dressing percentage can influence cattle at the sale barn.

- Kim Anderson says five dollar wheat is encouraging some Oklahoma producers to plant more acres.

- Finally, we travel to Garfield County to learn about the volunteer effort to create barn quilts and bring more visitors to the Covington community.
