NWF Hosts Wheat 105 Educational Event, Yield Contest Recognition
Thu, 04 Mar 2021 09:24:41 CST
Yesterday, the National Wheat Foundation (NWF) held its fifth annual wheat education event for Congressional staffers, called Wheat 105. Traditionally, the event is held in person on Capitol Hill, but due to COVID-19 the event was held virtually. Hosted jointly with BNSF Railroad, Wheat 105 featured speakers from the NWF, BNSF, U.S. Wheat Associates, the McGregor Company, the North American Millers Association, and the Grain Foods Foundation, and it enabled Hill staff to interact directly with 18 organizations/companies throughout the entire wheat value chain.
"Five years ago, we started hosting this annual educational event for policymakers and their staff in order to demonstrate just how big of a role the wheat value chain plays in not only the farm economy, but more broadly in feeding the country and the world," said NWF Executive Director Chandler Goule. "Though it was virtual this year, we had great participation from Hill staff and look forward to continuing this event in-person in the future."
The Foundation also honored the 2020 National Wheat Yield Contest winners yesterday with a virtual awards ceremony, which ordinarily takes place during an in-person reception in conjunction with Commodity Classic.
"Last November, we announced the national and state winners of the contest and had a record breaking 418 participants," said NWF Chairman David Cleavinger, a Texas wheat farmer. "We saw some incredible yields, and having implemented a quality component in the contest we're able to evaluate and demonstrate practices that maximize production and value. We're so appreciative of the participants and proud to have this opportunity to recognize their work."
