Planning Prescribed Burns with OSU's Fire Specialist John Weir
Mon, 08 Mar 2021 11:41:58 CST
Oklahoma State University's Extension Prescribed Fire Specialist John Weir, explains how advance planning of prescribed burns increase the safety of the land owners as well as their neighbors. He also has tips for burning during the winter months.
Weir said now is the time to start planning a controlled burn. He said its important to plan ahead by designating boundaries and looking to see if there is anything you need to move, or push back to stay out of the way of the burn, and to get your fire breaks prepped so you will have plenty of time before the burn.
If you are planning on grazing, Weir said you will have to think about that making your fire less effective. You can also graze prior to the prescribed burn to lessen fire intensity. You would also need to ensure there is room for fire control equipment at the edge of the burn to ensure the safety of the burn.
Weir added there is a lot of things to start thinking and planning for if you do plan on doing a controlled burn in the future. To hear the complete conversation with Weir, click here to hear him on SUNUP.
