USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) provided producers insight into how the agencies are working with the pork industry to prevent African swine fever (ASF) from entering the U.S.
• Dominican Republic is leading the ASF response. USDA is assisting with eradication and providing additional testing support.
• USDA is enhancing ASF mitigation efforts in Puerto Rico, including speeding up the 6-year plan to eradicate feral swine from the island.
• CBP is employing a layered approach, focused on cargo and people traffic, to monitor for potential ASF risk factors entering the U.S.
• ASF in the Western Hemisphere creates unique challenges with smaller planes and boats and multiple ports of entry; CBP is working to mitigate these ports' risks.
