Devon Provides STEM Grant for Northwestern OK FFA Chapters

Thu, 30 Sep 2021 10:51:24 CDT

Devon Provides STEM Grant for Northwestern OK FFA Chapters Two northwestern Oklahoma FFA chapters will receive a grant from Devon Energy to enhance their science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education.

The Guthrie and Coyle FFA chapters will purchase an egg incubator and hatcher to generate more excitement for hands-on learning. Students will monitor eggs daily, then take care of the birds - including chickens and game fowl - when they hatch.

The equipment will be used by multiple grade levels in student-led experiments, and will create new opportunities for the science department at Guthrie High School. The incubator and hatcher will generate excitement about how science and technology affect agriculture.

"It's neat how Oklahoma FFA chapters come together to share resources to elevate their understanding of agriculture," said Jacey Fye, executive director of the Oklahoma FFA Foundation. "Thanks to Devon, these students will have a deeper understanding of science and technology and will be able to serve their communities."

Devon started the FFA Technology & Innovation Grants in 2019 to increase access to advanced tools being used in the agriculture industry and provide hands-on learning opportunities. This year, Ovintiv joined the initiative.

"We know students learn best when they can put STEM principles into action and see the results," said Christina Rehkop, Devon's director of community relations. "These grants give schools exactly what they need to prepare the next generations of scientists, engineers and agriculture experts, and we are glad to support schools across Oklahoma."

The Chandler, Harrah, Marlow and Ryan FFA chapters also received Technology & Innovation Grants.
