Thu, 30 Sep 2021 12:49:09 CDT
According to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor report, as the 2021-22 water year came to a close, the West, northern Plains and upper Midwest had the poorest recorded precipitation.
The last week brought cooler-than-normal temperatures for this time of year but limited to no precipitation. Now, almost all of Oklahoma had drought conditions worsen. These changes bled into northern and central Texas.
The region of the High Plains also had little to no precipitation, with higher-than-normal temperatures. For farmers waiting on grain dry down and maturity, the weather kickstarted harvest. Drought conditions in the region intensified and in some cases, like in North Dakota, extreme drought conditions returned.
In the West, drought conditions largely remain. According to the report, coastal areas and parts of Arizona and New Mexico had some decent precipitation. Some exceptional drought was removed in northeast Nevada and into western Utah while exceptional drought was expanded over western Montana.
