Oklahoma CattleWomen Present Cultivating CattleWomen Series
Tue, 05 Oct 2021 14:54:51 CDT
Oklahoma CattleWomen members are putting on the first event in the Cultivating CattleWomen series. Through this event, the OCW aim to cultivate knowledgeable and successful ranchers through hands-on experiences and training. KC Sheperd, associate farm director for Radio Oklahoma Ag Network, talks with Cheyenne Sparks, president of the Oklahoma Cattlewomen, ahead of the event.
"I am so excited to bring forth the Cultivating CattleWomen series," Sparks said. "This is the first, in what I hope to be, a four-part series over the next two years of my presidency."
She said there was no one better to partner with for the event than the sixth and only female president of the National Stockyards Kelli Payne.
"She has been absolutely wonderful," Sparks said. "She is a fifth-generation rancher and the epitome of what a true cattlewoman looks like, so being able to partner with her for this first event - I am just beyond excited."
The event is set to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23 at the Oklahoma National Stockyards in Oklahoma City. There will be two training sessions: Trailer Handling and Vaccination Handling, Storage and Use. Attendees will also enjoy a delicious, steak lunch, a fashion show hosted by Stockyards City Main Street and will have an opportunity to receive a variety of goodies and prizes.
Registration is free for dues-paying members of OCW and is $20 for non-members. Non-member registration of $20 will automatically sign them up as members of OCW for 2021-2022. The last day to register is October 16th.
"We are wanting to create successful ranchers," Sparks said. "We want to create them in a safe place, so we are going to have trainings that maybe you have done before but you need a little help on, or maybe you have been taught to hold the flashlight but not how to change the oil."
The trailer-handling class will cover both gooseneck and bumper-pull trailer styles, from hooking up, hauling and backing. The vaccination safety class will be provided by Dr. Don Goodman, who will show OCW members how to properly handle, store and inject vaccinations. The key to the event is to create a judgment-free zone where women can learn from other women.
"Usually, you are just in the thick of it - you are not having the opportunity to truly learn," Sparks said. "Being able to sit down and focus on (the lessons) and get better at it (will) give you more confidence so you can do it in your everyday life."
According to Sparks, you do not have to own cattle to become a cattlewoman. The event will be beneficial to anyone with an interest and willingness to learn more about the industry. Sparks said it is also a great way to meet other cattlewomen and feel connecting within the industry. To register, visit okcattlewomen.org.
