National Farmers Union Supports Legislation to Establish a Contract Library for Cattle
Thu, 21 Oct 2021 10:03:39 CDT
On Wednesday, Representatives Dusty Johnson and Henry Cuellar introduced the Cattle Contract Library Act of 2021. This bill would direct USDA to create and maintain a library for cattle contracts to ensure cattlemen have greater insight into the contract terms being offered by packers. Meeting in Phoenix, AR last May, NFU along with other farm and cattle groups, agreed that a cattle contract library was one of several issues that deserved strong consideration for reform.
NFU President Rob Larew explained that a cattle contract library could be "an important tool that will help producers negotiate more favorable terms for their cattle. Instituting this new policy will be a helpful step in bringing greater fairness and competition to cattle markets."
The Cattle Contract Library Act will be considered before the full House Agriculture Committee on Thursday, October 21.
