Monday, December 27, 2021, Fire Situation Report: A Few Small Fires Burn Just 24 Acres

Monday, December 27, 2021, Fire Situation Report: A Few Small Fires Burn Just 24 Acres According to Wednesday's Fire Situation Report from the Oklahoma Forestry Services, a few small fires burn 24 acres.

Statewide Discussion: Very dry air will overspread Oklahoma today with afternoon relative humidity values in the teens west and 20%'s east excluding far southeastern Oklahoma where 30%+ observations seem likely. Winds will be much lighter and variable sky cover will be present serving to calm fire behavior potential, but the building dryness will encourage an environment supporting increasing initial attack frequency. A weak cold front today will shift back north overnight offering some rainfall chances generally east of I-35 although amounts appear negligible. Fire danger again ramps up on Tuesday with high to very-high indices in the central and western regions of the state.

Today: Marginal to poor overnight moisture recovery in central and western Oklahoma encouraging accelerated drying of fuels will generate very receptive fuels today. Fortunately, wind speeds will be much lighter than in previous days affording good opportunity for initial attack efforts to be successful.

· Oklahoma Panhandle: The highest fire danger indices today will be in the Oklahoma Panhandle where temperatures this afternoon will range from 55?-58? with relative humidity values 15-18%. Poor overnight moisture recovery will support early initiation of the burning period although persistent sky cover will prevent fine-dead fuel moisture values from tapping critical for the area holding at 5%. Variable winds this morning will become southerly sustained 12-19 mph with gusts in the western half of the PH at 25-30 mph. Fires that become established in fuels typical of the area will exhibit head fire rates of spread 96-156 ft/min and flame lengths 10-11 ft.

· Central/Western Oklahoma: Very dry air will sink into the area today with afternoon relative humidity values 16-23%. Temperatures will remain warm for the season registering 57?-72? with variable sky cover. Fine-dead fuel moisture will be 5% across much of the area with some 6% observations in east-central Oklahoma. Light north to northeast winds sustained 6-12 mph will hold concerning fire spread potential in check. Rangeland fuels will support head fire rates of spread at 79-126 ft/min with flame lengths 8-12 ft. Mixed fuels will exhibit ROS 60-94 ft/min and FL 8-17 ft. with problematic fire behavior remaining in the mix.

· Eastern Oklahoma: Temperatures will range from 59? north to possibly the mid-70?'s south under increasing sky cover and relative humidity values 25-36% rendering fine-dead fuel moisture values this afternoon at 6-7%. Fire behavior will permit very good initial attack opportunity as winds will be fairly light through the burning period sustained 5-10 mph. Grass dominated fuels will exhibit head fire rates of spread 78-113 ft/min with flame lengths 8-15 ft. while timber-litter will support ROS nearer 25 ft/min with FL around 5 ft.

Near Term: Some rain chances will develop overnight in eastern Oklahoma (best opportunity in far NE Oklahoma) as a warm front shifts north noting that amounts will likely be negligible. Tuesday will bring another high fire danger day to Oklahoma with focused in western Oklahoma and the Panhandle counties with higher indices in the central and east-central counties as well. Conditions will be right at or just below warning criteria across western Oklahoma. Current forecast information includes some bitter temperatures this coming weekend, but before we get there, fire danger will continue to dominate the area noting that after Tuesday conditions gradually moderate.
