Best of Beef Honored at Annual Convention

Producers, advocates, students and organizations representing the best of the beef industry were recognized through a variety of scholarship and award programs during the annual Cattle Industry Convention & NCBA Trade Show, held Feb. 1-3, 2022, in Houston.
2021 Environmental Stewardship Award Program Regional Winners
The Environmental Stewardship Award Program (ESAP), which annually recognizes outstanding stewardship practices and conservation achievements of cattle producers, honored seven regional winners, including:
• Region I - EZ Acres, LLC, Homer, N.Y.
• Region II - Vaughn Farms, Forsyth, Ga.
• Region III - Robbins Land & Cattle, Scranton, Iowa
• Region IV - Dry Creek Ranch, San Angelo, Texas
• Region V - Joe C King & Sons Ranch, Winnett, Mont.
• Region VI - JY Ferry & Son, Inc., Corinne, Utah
• Region VII - Blair Brothers Angus Ranch, Vale, S.D.
ESAP is generously sponsored by companies and federal agencies who share the cattle industry's commitment to caring for the environment and protecting natural resources. Sponsors including Corteva Agriscience, U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service, McDonald's, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service partner with the National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) in an effort to promote environmental stewardship throughout the beef supply chain.
Beef Quality Assurance Awards
The National Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) Awards, funded in part by the Beef Checkoff program and sponsored by Cargill, annually recognize outstanding beef and dairy producers, marketers and educators. Winners not only demonstrate high-quality animal care and handling principles as part of their day-to-day operations but also express a strong desire to continually improve their operations through BQA.
The 2022 honorees include Cow-Calf Award winner River Bend Ranch, Limon, Colo.; FARM Dairy Award recipient Langeland Farms, Coopersville, Mich.; Feedyard Award winner Kuner Feedlot, Kersey, Colo.; Educator Award recipient Dr. Deb VanOverbeke, Oklahoma State University; and the Marketer Award presented to W&J Carpenter, Inc., Arapahoe, Neb.
W.D. Farr Scholarships
Kiera Leddy, Drake University Law School, and Maci Mueller, University of California (UC) Davis, were each awarded a $15,000 W.D. Farr Scholarship by the National Cattlemen's Foundation (NCF). The annual W.D. Farr Scholarship program, established by the NCF in 2007, recognizes outstanding graduate students who plan to pursue careers furthering the beef industry. Leddy and Mueller were selected from 32 applicants based on their academic achievements, leadership and commitment to advancement of the beef industry.
CME Group Beef Industry Scholarships
Ten students pursuing careers in the beef industry were awarded $1,500 scholarships by the NCF. The CME Group Beef Industry Scholarship program recognizes talented and thoughtful students emerging as industry leaders. The 2022 CME Group Beef Industry Scholarship recipients include:

• Ellie Kenagy, Oakland, Ore., Oregon State University
• Korbin Leddy, Stockholm, S.D., South Dakota State University

• Collin Ochsner, Kersey, Colo., Texas Tech University
• Hannah O'Connor, Rio Oso, Calif., Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
• Weston Schrader, Wells, Kan., Kansas State University
• Jacee Sumpter, Branson, Colo., West Texas A & M University
• Ethan Vanderwert, Columbia, Mo., University of Missouri
Masters of Beef Advocacy Program Advocate of the Year
California rancher Markie Hageman was honored as the 2021 Advocate of the Year for her active advocacy work sharing posts on social media that resonate with younger audiences. This award, given annually by the NCBA's Beef Checkoff-funded Masters of Beef Advocacy (MBA) program, recognizes an outstanding beef advocate for success in engaging consumers who want to learn more about beef and raising cattle.
NCBA Top Hand Club
The Top Hand Club is NCBA's member-driven recruitment program, developed to recognize those NCBA members who continually give their time and effort to recruit new members. First place was awarded to Steve Wooten, representing the Colorado Cattlemen's Association; second place to Janie Van Winkle, representing Colorado Cattlemen's Association; and third place to Melody Benjamin representing the Nebraska Cattlemen's Association.
