State Rep. Ty Burns Talks Oklahoma Certified Beef Program Expanding to Other Animal Protein
Thu, 17 Feb 2022 12:28:32 CST
Homegrown- right here in Oklahoma, is the motto of the Oklahoma Certified Beef Association. In 2020, Ty Burns, Oklahoma representative for district 35, introduced a bill that would define Oklahoma Certified Beef as guaranteed to be bred, born, raised and processed exclusively within Oklahoma. The bill passed and the first OCB steak was enjoyed at the top of the Devon Tower by Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt early last year.
Recently, KC Sheperd, senior farm director for the Oklahoma Farm Report, spoke with Burns about the progress OCBA has made since. He said the progress the association has made is exciting but there are still some growing pains.
"I did not feel like there was any other avenue for cow-calvers," Burns said. "You can take them to the sale barn and that is it. I was trying to figure out how to promote and protect Oklahoma cow-calvers and it became easy - it popped into my head while I was driving down a Pawnee County back road."
Essentially, OCBA is a value-added marketing program exclusively offered to Oklahoma AFR Cooperative members. There are no breed requirements or operation size requirements.
"Oklahoma ranchers are number-one in the eyes of this program," Burns said. "You can do this on the hoof, in the package - whatever you want to do - it has a wide variety of options."
The association is looking to expand the program to include other animal protein sources, Burns said. The best way to grow this program is for Oklahoma producers to get involved. See how you can get involved or learn more by clicking or tapping here.
