Elgin FFA's Cassie Graham Talks about Why She Chose to be an Ag Teacher

The Oklahoma Youth Expo is in full swing, wrapping up the Ag Mechanics contest last evening. Farm Director KC Sheperd caught up with Elgin FFA Teacher Cassie Graham about why she chose to be an Ag Teacher. Graham says this is an opportunity to get involved, "This is a chance to make an impact on other students, and this has been the best career I could ever have."

Graham said last year's Ag Mechanics show was one to remember as her crew took home the Grand Prize with their multipurpose hay trailer built by Gavin Smalley, Cade Janda, Dillon Pestun, and Gavin Hollars. Graham said even though they didn't get the big prize this year, they'll be shooting for it next year, "We'll see what we can do; we're just going to get bigger and better as we go on."

With the Ag Mechanics show in its 3rd year at OYE, Graham said one of her favorite things about the show is that students can see a finished product, "They can see their labor, their work, a result of actually finishing something and take some pride in that. So no matter how these students placed today, they can walk out and say they finished their project, they did it 100% themselves, and they can be proud of that."

Teamwork is another significant factor in ag mechanics as students have to choose projects, find partners to work with, and build those projects themselves. Graham said she's not sure what they will bring to the show next year, but she's excited about the opportunities. Graham said these kids work so hard to prepare, "These are ag kids, and they are involved in a lot of other things, so you have to talk about who can put in those hours." Graham said she's grateful to be at Elgin because everyone is so willing to work together to make sure the kids get to where they need to be, "We make sure we get the kids back and forth where they need to go, but students must have a work ethic, and they have to want to put in those extra hours."

Graham said she's so proud of her FFA kids, "It's amazing to see what these kids can do." When leaving for the contest, parents and administrators were proud and surprised at what these Ag kids had built. That excitement resonates wherever they go, "Just pulling it {the trailer} down the interstate here, you see people wave, and holler and it's pretty exciting to see the kid's reactions, and I'm way proud of them for what they do."
